Walmart clearance and rollbacks: what the signs mean
Rollback and Clearance are two different labels at Walmart. Here's what each one tells you, how they interact with price matching, and which popular tag theories Walmart hasn't confirmed.

The play
- Treat Rollback as a temporary price cut and Clearance as stock being sold off.
- Check the "Was" price and the item, not a theory about the digits on the tag.
- Know that Walmart's in-store price match excludes Walmart.com clearance and Rollback prices.
Walmart uses two words on its reduced-price signs and online listings: Rollback and Clearance. They look similar from the end of the aisle and they mean different things for your plan. Neither one is a coupon. They're price labels, and the useful question is what each label tells you about how long the price may last and what you can combine with it.
Rollback: a price cut on stock Walmart keeps carrying
Walmart describes Rollbacks as lower prices on everyday and seasonal items, and its website shows Rollback items with the reduced price next to a "Was" price. The practical reading is a temporary reduction on merchandise the store still stocks. Because Walmart doesn't publish how long a given Rollback lasts, treat the price as good today and don't assume it'll be there next week.
Clearance: stock being sold off
Clearance is a separate label on Walmart's site. It generally signals merchandise the store is clearing out, such as discontinued items, packaging changes or holiday goods after the holiday. Quantities can be limited to what's on the shelf in that store, and two stores may not have the same clearance prices.
Steps: shopping a reduced-price sign
- Read the whole tag. Check the item description, size and count against the product in front of you. A clearance tag can sit under the wrong item after a shelf reset.
- Compare the unit price. A reduced price on a small package can still cost more per ounce than a regular price on a larger one. Our unit price guide covers how to read the tag.
- Look for a manufacturer coupon. Walmart's coupon policy accepts valid paper manufacturer coupons on products it sells, one per item.
- Check the app for offers. Walmart runs manufacturer offers that pay Walmart Cash rewards. Its terms say that if you use a paper coupon and also have the offer on your account, the paper coupon is honored and you won't get Walmart Cash on that offer for that item in that purchase.
- Scan before you commit. If the price at the register doesn't match the sign, ask a store associate before paying.
Price matching and these labels
Walmart's stores will match the price of an identical item that's in stock on Walmart.com, under the conditions in its price match policy. That policy lists exclusions, and two matter here: Walmart.com special-event prices such as clearance, Rollback and Black Friday deals are excluded, and so are marketplace sellers' prices. The policy also says Walmart doesn't match competitors' prices, and the store manager on duty has the final decision. We cover the details in the price adjustment guide.
Tag theories Walmart hasn't confirmed
You'll find plenty of posts claiming that the last digit of a Walmart price, or a particular tag color, tells you whether an item is on its final markdown or about to drop again. Walmart doesn't publish any such code, and we couldn't find it in Walmart's own help or policy pages. Some of these theories may reflect a store's internal practice at some point; none is something you can rely on. If you want to know whether a price might drop further, the only dependable answer is that you can't know, so buy if the current price works for you.
Returns on reduced items
Return rules can differ by item and are set in Walmart's return policy, not by the price label. If you buy something on clearance, keep the receipt and check the return policy page for that product type before assuming you can bring it back.
The short version
A Rollback is a reduced price on an item Walmart carries; Clearance is stock being sold off. Neither can be price-matched in store from Walmart.com, both can take a matching paper manufacturer coupon under the coupon policy, and no published tag code predicts the next markdown. Walmart's policies change, so check the current versions linked below before you rely on them.
Fine print
- Walmart's site labels reduced items Rollback and Clearance as separate special offers, and Walmart describes Rollbacks as lower prices on everyday and seasonal items. (Walmart savings)
- Walmart's in-store price match covers identical items in stock on Walmart.com, and lists exclusions including Walmart.com special-event prices such as clearance, Rollback and Black Friday deals, plus marketplace sellers. The store manager on duty has the final decision. (Walmart price match policy · Walmart policies)
- Walmart accepts paper manufacturer coupons under its coupon policy; it says it does not give cash back when a coupon exceeds the item's price. (Walmart policies)
Store programs and policies change. Check the official terms linked below before you count on any of this at the register.
Stack it?
| Combination | Stack it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rollback price + paper manufacturer coupon | Check | The coupon policy doesn't exclude sale prices, but any excess over the price isn't paid out. |
| Clearance price + paper manufacturer coupon | Check | Same coupon policy applies; the coupon must match the item and scan. |
| In-store price match to a Walmart.com Rollback or clearance price | No | Listed as an exclusion in Walmart's price match policy. |
